Maarifa Bursaries: Education for a Greener Future

Despite their rich cultural heritage and proximity to Kenya’s thriving eco-tourism regions, the Maasai remain one of the most marginalised and economically disadvantaged communities in East Africa.

Today, fewer than 10% of Maasai children complete primary school, and even fewer continue on to secondary education. Without critical support, these young people face limited opportunities, trapped in a cycle of poverty with little chance to fulfil their potential or uplift their communities.

At The Maarifa Foundation, we believe that education is not just a human right — it’s a cornerstone for personal growth, community resilience, and environmental stewardship. Our school fee support program empowers students to stay in school and pursue their dreams, setting them on a path to become responsible leaders, skilled professionals, and advocates for conservation. Educated youth can increase their families’ incomes, drive local economic development, and promote peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife.

We are also deeply committed to gender equity. Through our minimum 50% female student policy, we ensure that girls — who are too often the first to be left behind and face higher risks of early marriage and school dropout — receive the support they need to thrive.

With your help, we can continue to break down barriers and create lasting change — for Maasai youth, their communities, and the natural landscapes they call home.

Primary School Fee Support

We are proud to support student fees at three primary schools in the Mara and Amboseli regions.

Your support ensures these children can continue their education without financial barriers.

Illoirero Primary School — Amboseli Ecosystem

Located in the Eselenkei Group Ranch, on the edge of the Selenkay Conservancy, Illoirero is a day school where we’ve been sponsoring students since 2020. Today, we proudly support 50 students, covering 100% of their annual fees — at just $50 AUD per student

Kishermoruak Primary School — Mara Region

Nestled at the boundary of Ol Kinyei Conservancy, Kishermoruak is a boarding school where we’ve been supporting students since 2022. Thanks to the ongoing generosity of the Solomons Group, we currently fund 50% of tuition fees for 16 students, affectionately known as the Solomons Sixteen.

Oloibormurt Primary School — Near Mara Ripoi & Ol Kinyei Conservancies

The newest member of the Maarifa family, Oloibormurt Primary School joined our program in 2024. Currently, we sponsor 10 students.

Secondary School Bursaries

In 2023, we proudly expanded our support to include high school bursaries for students who demonstrate both academic dedication and financial need. These young learners, drawn from Maasai communities surrounding the Selenkay, Ol Kinyei, and Mara Ripoi Conservancies, are pursuing secondary education at various institutions across Kenya.

Today, 16 students from the Mara and Amboseli regions are receiving our support, with The Maarifa Foundation covering 50% of their secondary school fees. Each year, we grow our impact by adding four new students from each region to our program — opening doors to continued education, greater opportunity, and brighter futures.

Through this initiative, we’re not only helping individual students succeed but also nurturing the next generation of leaders who will give back to their communities and help protect the precious landscapes they call home.
